Electa grows in art publishing with the acquisition of Abscondita

Rosanna Cappelli appointed managing director of Electa S.p.A.

The publishing house Electa, a historic protagonist on the Italian art and museum scene, is set to grow with the acquisition of Abscondita, the refined Milanese publisher of the writings of artists and art literature.

Electa, founded in 1945 by the insight of the art historian Bernard Berenson, over time has added to its role as publisher, specializing in architecture and the visual arts, activities related to the organization of exhibition events, the management of additional services for museums – including bookshops nationwide – and finally the creation of merchandising lines designed to the finest national and international standards.

Its catalogue, which boasts a continuity unmatched in volumes on art and architecture for scientific accuracy, style and wealth of illustrations, now includes the valuable series of timeless books published by Abscondita in their black covers: previously unpublished and often unavailable texts, they bring together the thoughts and reflections of painters, sculptors and architects accompanied by critical essays of fundamental importance.
These are reference works for art historians, those with inquiring minds and a desire for knowledge, and all who love the classics and literature in general.

For Abscondita, entry into Electa represents an opportunity based on the certainty that the independence, guidelines and spirit of Abscondita will not only be preserved, but will receive a new impulse and impetus.

The acquisition of Abscondita is one of Electa’s innovations for 2020.
75 years since its foundation, the publishing house regains its original name. And on January 1, 2020 Electa S.p.A. will be established, a company headed by Antonio Porro, vice president and managing director of Mondadori Libri.
Rosanna Cappelli takes over as managing director and becomes President of Abscondita.

“The purpose is to reinforce the identity of a distinguished brand that has been active for decades in the visual arts and cultural heritage sector, not only through the catalogues it publishes, with choices that enable readers to discover or rediscover the adventurous worlds of research, literature and the making of art, without neglecting the graphic and typographic experiments of the single books.” So Rosanna Cappelli, managing director of Electa S.p.A.

An archaeologist, a graduate from Perugia with a thesis on the figurative ideology of the Augustan age, Rosanna Cappelli joined Electa in 2001 to take over the management, development and coordination of the Cultural Heritage sector. In 2010 she became general manager of the Art, Exhibitions and Museums division of the publishing house.
Her scientific activities have been followed by an interest in the protection of the heritage and the practices of management and enhancement of the value of the cultural assets, a subject to which she has devoted several publications.
Cappelli has been a member of the MIBAC commission for the activities of Valorization of the Cultural Heritage and has taken part in numerous conferences and Masters of specialization in Italian universities.
Under her direction, Electa continues with a strong sense of purpose to engage in the production of exhibitions, publication of catalogues and management of services for museums. These include the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, the Museo Nazionale Romano, the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte and the MANN in Naples, and the Museo del Novecento in Milan, where the publishing house is present in various capacities.

Abscondita
Founded in 1999 by the parent company SE thanks to an idea of the editorial director Carlo Corsi and already distributed by the Mondadori Group, Abscondita aims to spread artistic studies, also in the light of the interest of an increasingly broad public that visits exhibitions and museums.
The catalogue is divided into five series: CARTE D’ARTISTI (some 200 titles), MINIATURE (some 120 titles), AESTHETICA (60 volumes) with the names of great Italian twentieth-century artists, such as Boccioni, de Chirico, Morandi, Sironi and international figures such as Picasso, Kandinsky, Hopper, Kahlo and Duchamp, as well as illustrious critics such as Longhi, Clair, Chastel, Panofsky and Berenson.
The first, CARTE D’ARTISTI (artists’ papers), established as a series devoted to the thoughts and memories of artists, has opened over time to critical texts.
MINIATURE continues along the lines already traced in the major series with the only difference that it hosts short texts.
As for AESTHETICA, the publisher wished to create a series of studies dealing with much more than art by hosting famous critics such as Warburg, Bloom, Zambrano, Praz and Macchia. In recent years, two lines of illustrated books have been added: MNEMOSYNE and ALBUM (with 20 and 15 titles respectively), featuring artists such as Warhol, Dalí and Modigliani, alongside great photographers such as Man Ray, Tina Modotti, Nadar and Sander.

Mondadori Media S.p.A., the new brand development company of the Mondadori Group

From 1 January 2020, a new organizational setup built on brand enhancement from a multi-channel perspective

From 1 January 2020, the activities referring to Mondadori Group magazines and websites, as well as the equity investments in the Magazines Italy Area, will be transferred to the wholly-owned subsidiary Mondadori Media S.p.A..

More specifically, the business unit – the ownership of Arnoldo Mondadori Editore S.p.A. – will be transferred to Mondadori Media S.p.A. and will comprise:

the BU referring to print, digital magazines and shared services;
the subsidiaries Direct Channel S.p.A. (100%), Press-di Distribuzione Stampa e Multimedia S.r.l. (100%), Adkaora S.r.l. (100%), Mondadori Scienza S.p.A. (100%) and the investees Mediamond (50%) and Mondadori Seec (Bejiing) Advertising Co. Ltd (50%), which publishes the magazine Grazia in China.

Ernesto Mauri, CEO of the Mondadori Group, will be named Chairman of Mondadori Media S.p.A.. Additionally, Carlo Mandelli will be appointed Managing Director and Andrea Santagata General Manager, the latter keeping his position as Group Chief Innovation Officer.

The transaction – as with Mondadori Libri S.p.A. and Mondadori Retail S.p.A. – gives birth to a specific corporate structure that enhances each of the Group’s businesses.

The setup allows an even more efficient and targeted management, taking account of the peculiarities of each activity, and is more functional to the achievement of strategic opportunities and partnerships.

MONDADORI MEDIA ORGANIZATIONAL MODEL
From 1 January 2020, Mondadori Media S.p.A. will adopt a more effective and functional setup, integrating print and digital operations. The focus is on enhancing those brands with high multimedia development potential, consistent also with a product portfolio that has been streamlined over the past 12 months.

The new setup will hinge on two pillars:

all-round brand management, with the creation of three theme macro-areas: Entertainment, Fashion&Design, Mass Market.

The aim is to share each know-how, circulating the brands across all channels, from print to the web, from events to social networks, and from TV formats to smart speakers. A further aim is to broaden and increasingly diversify the sources of revenue, and to satisfy the needs of readers/users and investors;

cross-cutting specialist teams supporting the brands (from events to add-on sales, from distribution to subscriptions): the aim is to guarantee an ongoing and increasingly necessary search for efficiency.

Lastly, Mondadori Media S.p.A. will avail itself of two staff units – Marketing and Business Development – in order to speed up the business transformation process launched with the acquisition of Banzai Media, strengthen relations with the market and encourage brand multimedia integration.

The Mondadori Group is the market leader in magazines, with a circulation market share in terms of value of approximately 31% in 2018, and is Italy’s top digital publisher: leveraging on a portfolio of iconic brands and a wealth of extraordinarily rich content, every month it reaches 17 million readers, 30 million unique online users and 33 million people on social networks.
At 31 December 2018, the Magazines Italy Area reported revenue of € 287 million.

Our publishing houses together with ActionAid in “Insieme per l’istruzione” project

Mondadori, Einaudi, Rizzoli, Piemme, Sperling&Kupfer, Mondadori Electa and Fabbri Editori to support the “Insieme per l’istruzione” (Together for Education) project:
with the construction of two schools in the Raya Azebo district together with ActionAid

Even today 120 million children around the world do not receive a basic education, and more than half of them are girls. Without the chance to study it is impossible to imagine a future, without adequate quality education there are no opportunities to build a better and more secure life.

The right to an education is even more at risk in countries like Ethiopia, where almost 30 million people live below the poverty line and 30.4% of children under the age of 5 suffer from malnutrition. Too many boys and girls (70%) are obliged to leave education after primary school in order to help their families by working in the fields and because of a lack of the right kind of support.

This is why, for Christmas, ActionAid together with Mondadori, Einaudi, Rizzoli, Piemme, Sperling&Kupfer, Mondadori Electa and Fabbri Editori have come together to face an important challenge: to guarantee the right to education for 1,800 boys and girls in the Raya Azebo of Ethiopia, one of the places in the world where the provision of primary education is most urgent, and an area that is frequently without access to drinking water and adequate sanitation.

“Going to school in Ethiopia and being able to complete studies with quality education is a right that is denied to too many children especially girls. To able to work alongside a partner like Mondadori is to receive the kind of fundamental support that will make it possible to realise the dreams of 1,800 children who have neither classrooms, nor books or materials. Thanks to the contribution of the publishing houses of the Group we will be able to build two new schools, provide electricity, drinking water and sanitation, support teacher training and build awareness in the local community of the importance of educating girls, in one of the poorest regions of the country,” declared Marco De Ponte, Secretary General of ActionAid.

The importance of an education worthy of the name – that is equal, inclusive and accessible to everyone – is an absolute priority for the Mondadori Group: indeed, it is part of a profound sense among the people who work in the company that it is a natural and fundamental element of our traditions and history as a company” declared Enrico Selva Coddè, Chief Executive of the Trade Area of Mondadori Books. “This initiative allows our publishing houses to go further and engage in a concrete and inclusive solidarity project that will benefit one of the areas of the world in which the need is most urgent. Being able to work alongside a partner like ActionAid is a guarantee for us of the seriousness of our joint commitment” concluded Enrico Selva Coddè.

The project

Most of the schools in the Raya Azebo district have wooden frames and mud walls. And due to the lack of separate toilet facilities for boys and girls, it is impossible for girls to go to school during their menstrual cycle. Such frequent absence from lessons consequently leads to poor results and even abandoning school altogether.

With the “Insieme per l’istruzione” (Together for Education) project, ActionAid and the publishing houses of the Mondadori Group will create a safe school environment for 1,800 children, half of them girls, in the primary schools of the Barie Woyane and Hawulti communities. During 2020 two school buildings, each with four classrooms, a library and separate toilet facilities for girls, will be completed. Also teaching materials and classroom furniture will be provided, along with support for girls and initiatives to improve school governance, with the increased involvement of the local communities.

With this initiative, ActionAid and the publishing houses of the Mondadori Group are committed to the shared support of the fourth of the Sustainable Objectives set by the United Nations for 2030.
